Beginning September 23, 2020, Save the World will no longer be playable on Mac.įor more information, please visit: pic.twitter. In a blog post Epic said that Apple is to blame because it is preventing the company from signing updates, which will cause bugs in the future.Īs a result, refunds are coming to “all players who purchased any Save the World Founder’s or Starter Packs (including Upgrades) and played Save the World on macOS between Septemand September 17, 2020.” This announcement comes just after Apple said in a legal filing that Epic’s actions are a thinly-disguised attempt to reinvigorate Fortnite, citing Google Trends as evidence that interest had dropped some 70 percent in the last year.Īpple is preventing us from distributing games on Mac which ends our ability to develop Fortnite: Save the World for the platform. The same applies to Save the World, which has continued as a premium-priced game with annual updates unlike its free counterpart, but that’s coming to an end on macOS as of September 23rd. While the battle royale version is still playable on macOS and will continue to work, it’s already cut off from receiving new updates. The two companies are fighting over Apple’s policies that mandate a cut of Epic’s profits and prevent it from including non-Apple payment options. I think Tim Cook and the shareholders should be drooling over this possibility.Fortnite: Save the World - a castle building players-vs-zombies version of the game that preceded the battle royale spin-off - is becoming a casualty in the ongoing war between Epic Games and Apple. Apple will look like the victim of an unjust government while winning all the control they ever wanted. Google Trends is a tool that analyzes search queries in Google and compares search volume over time, giving a sense of the relative popularity of a search term. That is, Apple could be forced to shut down its App Store (saying that they won't permit the courts to micromanage the operating system) and then blame either Epic or the Courts for forcing the removal of the App Store resulting in allowing only Apple branded software onto iOS. Fortnite Player Count (Estimated) Game Popularity Based on Google Trends Our player count tool uses Google Trends as it’s data source. I don't think Epic really wants that, do they? If that happened, the only way Epic could get Fortnite onto iOS devices would be to let Apple brand Fortnite as "Apple Fortnite."įrankly, I think this is a win-win for Apple. That wouldn't stop developers from submitting apps to Apple to have them rebranded as Apple apps, but it would actually put MORE control into Apple's hands, not less. Apple is likely to win, but courts often come up with compromise solutions.īut Apple has one ace up its sleeve if Epic "wins." Apple can just shut down the App Store and revert to only Apple-branded software like it used to have when the iPhone first came out. I think the crux of the matter is that Epic wants Apple to be forced to change its operating system and services to suit their purposes. It's entirely possible that resolving this issue in a clear way may require new laws. Although the courts can only interpret current laws, while the role of government is to create new laws. When the legality of something is questionable I welcome the role of the courts in resolving the question permanently. I am trying to read Epic's submission but it's hundreds of pages in length and scrolling through the document is painfully slow and the quality of the scan is not very good.
